While real estate professionals invest heavily in signage, newspaper advertisements, fliers, open houses, the Web, and other resources to market their listings, they acknowledge that another key — and free — source of help are the property’s neighbors.
People already living in a neighborhood where a home is up for sale often pass along information about it through casual conversation with friends, co-workers, and relatives. Agents agree that word of mouth is a great way to promote a property and get prospective buyers in the door.
Joe Simone of Preakness Realty in Wayne, N.J., told NewJersey.com that he’ll send out several hundred cards advertising listings to neighbors.
“In this market, you have to think outside the box,” Simone said. “Just putting up a sign on the lawn doesn’t work, you have to be proactive. Who is going to be the best advocate to move into the neighborhood than the neighbors themselves?”
