Long Branch is a city rich in history. As a place offering shore sun and fun it’s had few peers. According to the 1940 book Entertaining a Nation, Long Branch became a national resort hot spot with the visit of First Lady Mary Lincoln in August 1861. And after that of course there are so many great stories and scenes.

As I was surfing the net recently looking for Monmouth County information, I happened upon a cool website, Historic Views of Long Branch. It’s a very fine collection of photos and postcards compiled by city native Edward Thomas.

In all my travels I have never seen a place better suited for a summer residence than Long Branch.”
—President Ulysses S. Grant, 1869

A fourth generation Long Branch resident, Ed is the grandson of former city Police Chief Thomas Marks. The Broker/Owner of city-based Shoreview Realty, Inc., Ed has served on the city’s planning board for over 20 years and is a Lifetime Member of the Long Branch Historical Association.

Below is just a sampling of his outstanding digital collection. Take a look and then jump over to his site to see the more than 530 images he’s posted. Great stuff!
